How it works

Every byte doing useful work

  1. Paste keywords in priority order. The most important terms go first, because the field fills from the top.
  2. Add your title and bullets. Words you already use there are skipped, so you don't pay twice for the same word.
  3. Copy the result into Seller Central → Edit listing → Keywords → Search terms.

Amazon matches backend words in any order and combines them with your title, so single unique words are all you need. Read the full backend search terms guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are Amazon backend search terms?

Backend search terms (generic keywords) are hidden keywords you add in Seller Central under the Keywords tab of a listing. Shoppers never see them, but Amazon uses them to decide which searches your product can appear for.

How many characters can backend search terms have?

In the US the limit is 249 bytes, not characters. Most English letters and numbers are 1 byte each; accented letters and some symbols take more. Stay at or below 249 bytes, because going over can stop Amazon from indexing the field.

Should I repeat words from my title in backend search terms?

No. Words already in your title, bullets or other indexed fields don't gain anything from being repeated, so they waste bytes. Use the space for synonyms, alternate spellings, other languages your customers use and related use cases.

Do I need commas between backend keywords?

No. Separate words with spaces. Commas and other punctuation are not needed, and word order and repetition don't matter for indexing.

Can I put competitor brand names or ASINs in backend search terms?

No. Amazon policy does not allow other brand names, ASINs, offensive terms or temporary claims such as "new" or "on sale" in backend search terms.
